Low Country Maple Single Return Retro Tread

The Low Country Maple Collection offers our white hard maple in three stain colors and a natural (prefinished clear) color. Stain colors available in our Low Country Maple include:

  • Mt. Pleasant
  • Sullivan's Island
  • Georgetown
  • Natural (Prefinished Clear)

These prefinished single return retro treads are the perfect products for do-it-yourselfers. Due to the retro style, these treads can be installed over your preexisting stairs without having to remove them. Because these maple treads are prefinished, there is no need for the messy application of stain or numerous coats of polyurethane. Single return stair treads will typically have balusters that directly intersect the tread as well.

A single return retro tread is a stair tread with a wall on one side of the staircase and the opposite side is exposed when viewed from the side of the staircase. Right return retro treads have a mitered return attached to the right side of the stair tread and left return retro treads have a mitered return attached to the left side of the stair tread.

The Retro style means that this stair tread is designed to be installed over an existing stair. Single return Maple retro treads are a full inch thick on the bullnosed edges, 3/4" thick throughout the tread body and are 11-1/2" deep. The Single Return style means that this stair tread has one mitered return along the left or right edge. Remember that "right" and "left" are relative but is always determined as you ascend the staircase (standing at the bottom looking up). Sometimes this style of stair tread can be referred to as an "open stair tread" or "single mitered return stair tread". A quick and easy test is to determine if there is or will be a wall on one side of your new staircase with the opposite side of the staircase visible from the ground level once installed? Will your balusters directly intersect your new stair tread? If the answer is "yes", these return retro treads are for you. If both ends are against a wall or kneewall, you need a "Low Country Maple Closed" or "box" tread. Also consider a Low Country Maple Landing Tread for the very top of your staircase and matching Low Country Maple Retro Risers for the vertical space between each step.
