The 1-1/4" plowed option means that a 1-1/4" wide channel has been cut from the bottom of the handrail. This allows 1-1/4" square top balusters to be installed into the bottom of the handrail. If a rail is plowed, a matching amount of "fillet" is included with the rail. Fillet is installed in the remaining channel between each baluster and makes the balusters appear to penetrate the rail.
Plowed rail is only used with square top balusters, if you plan on using iron balusters or wood balusters with a round top, choose an unplowed rail and drill a 1/2" diameter hole instead.
