ARE THE KNOTS GETTING BIGGER IN MY KNOTTY WOOD SPECIES?
NO!!! Occasionally after a customer purchases a knotty wood species, they will notice what looks like the knots appear to be larger and protrude after it is installed and of course are curious as to what is happening. Here is the short answer and solution:
Moisture content in the air is why this is occurring and controlling/minimizing any changes in it is how the issue is solved. Normal behavior for wood is to react by expanding or contracting, depending on how much moisture is in the air. When moisture is decreased the wood will contract slightly, except for the knots. Until the moisture in the environment is back in balance the knots will appear to be a little bigger than they were before.
