PL Premium is our only recommended adhesive for installing wood stair treads. Unlike other adhesives, it does not contain any water and is therefore less likely to cause problems associated with moisture (cupping, bowing, etc) than other adhesives. These 10 oz PL Premium cartridges fit in a standard caulk gun.

Note: For treads up to 48" long - plan on using 1/2 - 3/4 tube per tread and riser. Longer treads may require more.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Can you use PL 8X for red oak retreads bonding to old steps?
A:We can not recommend any other adhesive than the PL Premium. Please see the link below about the adhesive used for installation. Recommended Adhesive: http://www.stair-treads.com/resources/recommended-adhesives-for-installing-stair-treads.html
  2. Q:My installers got adhesive fingerprints on the treads and risers. What’s the safest way to get it off without damaging the finish. I have been using a soft abrasive facial cleansing pad. It works, but very slowly, and lots of elbow grease.
A:If the glue is still wet, any solvent such as acetone, mineral spirits, paint thinner, etc. can be used. We actually wrote about one installer using WD-40 to remove the glue. See: https://www.stair-treads.com/blog/easy-way-to-clean-new-wood-stair-treads/ Dried adhesive will be very difficult to remove but may be softened by the above mentioned solvents. Once softened, you can use a plastic paint scraper to assist but it will still require a good bit of elbow grease to remove dried adhesive. Our standard UV finish has excellent resistance to most solvents, especially for short periods of time so feel free to use the solvent of your choice to make the job easier. Please note: if we finished your steps with a low sheen or custom / finish - they will generally be far less durable and you'll need to be careful which solvents you use. Small amounts of acetone is the only recommended solvent and be sure not let the solvent puddle.
