Does the left return portion fit over the existing left return or does the existing left return get cut off. I just want to make sure I get the install correct. Thanks.

The existing left return would also need to be cut off to fit.

Minwax Wood Putty or Nail Filler will do the job! They have colors that are very similar to Butterscotch. You can purchase these items at a local hardware store.

Our second step has only 5" of the left side open, the rest is closed. Can I cut the return I don't need without compromising the rest? or would it be better to have it custom made from you?

You should be able to cut the tread and not compromise the rest. If you decide you would like the custom tread, you can call and talk to a friendly team member who will assist you with that!
