Details

White risers are a beautiful and economical addition to any staircase. They are especially popular in homes with other white trim and molding. White risers are also a great way to lighten a dark staircase or provide definition between steps.
When ordering risers, you'll typically order the same length as the tread. These retro risers are designed to reface an existing riser while being thin enough not to offset your new retro treads past any existing skirtboard.
Our white retro risers are shipped with an anti-scuff laminate on the surface and are ready to install. Standard riser dimensions are 1/4" nominal (3/16" actual) thick by 7-3/4" tall by 36" long.

Product Note: There may be some minor chipping of the white coating which occurs during transit. This is normal and is intended to be trimmed during installation since the risers are oversized for most applications.
Installation Note: Latex paint will not adhere to the coating on the retro risers - if painting the retro risers, additional prep work will be required.

These risers are designed to be used with our Retro stair treads as part of the complete staircase remodeling system

Product Questions

I have stairs that are open at one end. Do these have a finished end or is there a cap available?

In the riser description it indicates 7 3/4" by 36", but in the riser additional information it indicates 7 1/4" wide by 36" length. What is the actual height of these pre- primed risers? Thank you.

We carry two different profiles for our risers. The Retro Risers are 1/4 inch thick and 7 3/4 inches tall. The Traditional risers are 3/4 inch thick and 7 1/4 inches tall.

I watched your video and I saw the risers are installed on top of the stair treads. Can it be the other way around?

As long as you stay consistent with the entire staircase you can install the riser behind or on top of the stair tread.

Can the retro risers be cut? My stair riser is only 5 7/8" high.

The retro riser can be cut the the desired height on site with a table saw, which is very common.

These risers have a white laminate on the surface that is scuff resistant and designed for easy cleaning. They do not need to be painted prior to installation but if you would like to paint them, you will need to first prime them with a high-adhesion (high bond) primer designed for laminate surface adhesion. Please note, these risers can not be painted without first priming them because of the scuff resistant surface.

Is it possible to request that notches are cut into the treads before they ship? I live in an order house with cast iron rails. The bottom tread will require custom cutting. Is it possible to precut the notches prior to shipping, if I provide the dimensions?

Unfortunately, we can not custom cut any notches or angles before the product ships. Cuts such as these are best cut in the field to ensure the best fit for each product. Having a solid riser allows you to make any minor adjustments to the product during installation. We find that a jig saw is the best tool for cutting special notches and cutouts.

You can use Retro Risers with Traditional Treads. You may need the Cove Moulding with this method since you may see the seam between the riser and the tread. Below is a link to our cove moulding.

We don't recommend installing any of our products directly over concrete because of moisture issues. Instead, we recommend first sealing the concrete with with a roll-on moisture barrier and then "decking" the concrete with 3/4" plywood to allow for moisture to migrate around our products instead of through them.

None of our products are suitable for outdoor applications but even indoor concrete will still "wick" moisture much more readily than wood substrate and could create a product failure.

What is the prep work required to paint the white retro risers with latex paint?

Our new white risers have a coating on them which makes them scuff resistant but also a little more difficult to paint. You will need to first prime the riser with a coating to help adhesion of latex paint. We recommend a product like "Kilz" or other brand that is designed to promote adhesion of latex paints.

Alternatively, you may want to look at an oil-based paint as these typically have better adhesion rates than latex. Always test an area for adhesion and color before painting.
