Seeing the stain colors in your home's lighting allows you to select the best stain color to coordinate with the design and color pallet in your home. A finished sample of any of our wood species can also be ordered individually.

The red oak sample pack contains 2 pieces of each stain color to show the expected color range of each stain. For species other than red oak, the sample pack contains one piece, roughly 8" x 11-1/2" sample of the wood species.

Unfinished products are considered commodities and will require some degree of additional minor prep-work before they can be considered complete, or "finished". Some degree of sanding / puttying is to be expected before finishing. Alternatively, consider ordering prefinished products.

  1. Q:On the left return stair tread, I need the inside throat to be 42". The picture looks like the over all lenght is 42. The rest seem to be the inside measurement. Which is right? Thanks
    A:For single return treads, the tread measurement is the overall length, so a 42" tread will be 42" overall or have a 40 3/4" throat (42" tread - 1 1/4" when the mitered return is added).   2. Q:For the Red Oak Unfinished Retro Left Return Stair Tread 42 in , do I understand correctly that there is a 1 1/4" overhang for both the bull nose front edge and the mitered left return edge? When you use the term "throat" are you referring to the side of the existing stair that will be "capped" by the retro tread?
    A:Yes, you are correct - the retro style return treads have a 1-1/4" overhang on both the front edge and one side (in this case it's the left side - remember 'left' and 'right' are always relative as you're walking UP the staircase). Technically, the throat length is most important to double return treads because they can't be cut to length once made. This link perhaps better describes the 'throat' of a tread: http://www.stair-treads.com/resources/stair-tread-styles.html#double With single return treads, one end can be cut on site during installation so the most important point is to make sure the new tread fully covers the existing step.   4. Q:What is the inside measurement of tread from right finish bullnose to the end of a 54” tread
    A:The inside "throat" length of all single return treads is 1-1/4" shorter than the tread because the tread is made from a closed tread of the same length. For example, these will be the inside measurements of each single return tread: [42": 40-3/4"] [48": 46-3/4"] [54": 52-3/4"] [60": 58-3/4"]
