Using a Landing Tread to Transition into Carpet

One challenge our customers face during a stair installation is how to use a landing tread to transition into carpet at the top of the staircase. Here is a quick step by step guide on how to transition hardwood steps into carpet.

Landing Tread to Carpet

Cut away excess foam to clear a space to nail down a tack strip. If you do not have a new tack strip you can use a track strip you removed after pulling up the carpet from your staircase. The tacks should be facing toward the back of the landing tread.

Once the tack strip has been nailed into place, pull carpet over the tack strip. Using a screwdriver (in this case a cat paw is used) and hammer to force carpet over the tack strip ensuring that the carpet grips the tacks.

Once you have hammered the carpet down over the tack strip along the length of the landing tread cut away the excess carpet using the back of the landing tread as a straight edge.

Using the screwdriver and hammer run along the length of the landing tread to hammer down the remaining carpet onto the track strip, making sure the end of the carpet is not exposed.

The end result should be a smooth transition from the landing tread to the carpet floor!
